LISTINGS [18.06.13]

Hi everyone,

Last week of term, yay! This should be the last LISTINGS of the year, but if you are going to be around over the summer, I suggest you join up to the vac list here: http://www.lgbt.cusu.cam.ac.uk/mailing-lists/ I’ll send an email out to that list whenever there are events to tell you about. If you want to publicise an event over the summer (or indeed at any point), just email me at lgbt-comms@cusu.cam.ac.uk

If this is your last week ever at Cambridge, you might want to look at the LGBT+ Alumni network (details below).

I hope those of you went to the Rainbow Ball enjoyed it – I did and everyone looked lovely. While I’m sure you’re super busy this week, if you fancy another night out Spectrum is on this Wednesday (with a drinks giveaway) and there are details of other events below, after a few notices. These include the London Pride parade on the 29th.

If you are leaving, CONGRATULATIONS and GOOD LUCK! If not, see you next year!

Frances

GARDEN PARTY – a note from Ents & Socials:
Hey everyone, we’re really sorry that the garden party was cancelled this year – unfortunately we just didn’t have enough time to put the event together. We’re sorry to everyone who was looking forward to coming, but we hope that you all had a great night at the Rainbow Ball! The official photos from the night are due to be posted on the CUSU LGBT+ Facebook page in the next few days. We hope everyone is having an amazing May Week and has a great summer. (See below for Grad Picnic details.)

ALUMNI NETWORK
Congratulations to all finalists!

Whether or not you were out or active at university, you can use this group to meet people for the first time, to network, or just to see what people are up to.

In 2013 we’re running a pre-London Pride brunch before heading to the parade on 29 June, and we’re also running our first LGBT Cambridge Freshers’ Party in September.

Have a look at our website www.cambridgelgbtalumni.com and join the Facebook group https://www.facebook.com/groups/309977339109260/. If you don’t want to publicly join, but you do want to be involved, email taz.cambridgelgbtalumni@gmail.com.

STONEWALL TALENT PROGRAMME
Applications are now open for the 2013 Stonewall Talent Programme which will take place on 5 & 6 September in London. This free two day programme is for lesbian, gay and bisexual people of all gender identities, ethnicities and backgrounds, who are aged 18-25 and are yet to begin or at the very beginning of their careers. Through facilitated individual and group work it encourages participants to think about what kind of impact they want to have in their career and how they can achieve this.

Stonewall has found that lesbian, gay and bisexual people perform better when they can be themselves at work. The Talent Programme was launched in 2010 to support the development of a new generation of lesbian, gay and bisexual leaders who are able to be themselves and fulfil all their potential from the very start of their career. If you prefer something quieter, take a look at our library suggestions and the [no definition] notice below.Apologies for the number of parentheses in the above spiel, it’s what Medieval Spanish literature does to your brain :-s

Have a good week,

Frances

[no definition] This term’s [no definition] theme is LOVE & SEX.

Submissions can be sent to Ben via the UMS (Benedict Hawkins, Queen’s) or email lgbt-editor@cusu.cam.ac.uk

LIBRARY CORNER

Check out our music collection! From South Africa to the Southern USA, we’ve got music from all over, and lots of it’s nice and summery. This week’s highlight: Freshlyground’s Nomvula, a bilingual (but predominantly English) album, with lots of cheerful pop and fantastic instrumentals. For everything you could ever want to know about the library, take a look at

http://www.lgbt.cusu.cam.ac.uk/resources/library/

STATEMENT A statement from Charlie Bell (President) regarding the video featuring Tim Winter:

“Remarks degrading LGBT+ people, relationships or sexual practices surely disgust any of us who are part of the decade’s long struggle to see LGBT+ people as valued, equal citizens. CUSU LGBT+ was made aware of the video featuring the views of Mr Winter, DoS in Theology at Wolfson College, which hails from his time before being a Fellow at Cambridge. Whilst we, like the vast majority of students, absolutely disagree with his views on homosexuality, and indeed the tone in which they are made, he is an academic and the university has a duty to allow freedom of speech in its academical disciplines. We know that Mr Winter has asked for the video to be taken down; it remains for his college to decide whether these past remarks are incompatible with his current role in the college, especially if it has a pastoral nature, and we are currently in communication with them over this. To our knowledge no student of Mr Winter’s has made any accusations that he has treated them any differently because of their sexuality; his college must act on the best evidence and the views of students in that discipline and in that practice (and indeed potential applicants) before making any sudden decision on the back of a YouTube video. It is our role to be a campaign open to student views and opinions, and to remind the university that whatever academical views might be expressed, LGBT+ students and staff have the same rights as any others, and should be treated with the same respect and decency as any other member of this university, by every member of this university. We encourage any students who do not receive this respect or who otherwise need our support to contact us.”
