About the Campaign

CUSU (Cambridge University Students’ Union) is the organisation that supports students throughout the whole university and the LGBT Campaign is there to provide an extra level of support for all LGBT students at Cambridge. We are an autonomous campaign which means we use the CUSU name and we receive funds and resources from CUSU while retaining independence and freedom to deploy them as flexibly as the needs of our members dictate.

We provide a continuum of events that stretches from welfare to socials to campaigns and whilst we have separate officers for each, they are all part of a broader picture. We run social events of all shapes and sizes to help those who find it all a tad scary to meet others lucky enough to find things LGBT much easier. Such events are valuable in helping people feel comfortable in their own skin – and to this end there is a welfare officer too – but the underlying welfare aspirations do not stop them from being entertaining and worthwhile in their own right. A serious side does not preclude events from being enjoyable. Making sure that no one feels left out is vital and in addition to our events, there is a network of college reps supported by a dedicated Reps’ Coordinator. We also campaign on specific issues to improve the experiences and welfare of LGBT Cantabrigians.

CUSU LGBT holds a vote at CUSU Council which is the fortnightly meeting of students representing colleges, faculties or, as in our case, campaigns. This allows us to speak out on LGBT issues as they arise and we ensure our voice is heard on relevant issues. CUSU LGBT is run by a committee of about 15 (‘The Exec’) who are elected in the middle of Lent Term. We hold open meetings once or twice a term with the express purpose of consulting and engaging with members. It’s crucial that what we’re doing what is of the maximum possible value to our members and to that end, we’d all encourage you to come along and get involved. To hear about open meetings, keep an eye on this website or sign up to [LISTINGS], our email list, and of course if you can’t come or have any ideas in the interim, we’d love to hear from you!
